Structure of the GRE test

The GRE test comes in two formats:

GRE General Test: assesses students’ thinking and reasoning skills, without going into a specific discipline, with content consisting of 3 parts: Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing.

GRE Subject Test: measures students’ understanding in specific areas such as Chemistry, Biology, Math, Physics, Literature in English, Psychology.

A standard GRE test consists of three sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning.

  • Analytical Writing (60 minutes): Includes a small part analyzing an issue (Analyze an Issue) and a small part analyzing an argument (Analyze an Argument), each part lasting 30 minutes.
  • Verbal Reasoning (60 minutes): Includes two subsections, each with 20 questions.
  • Quantitative Reasoning (70 minutes): Includes two subsections, each with 20 questions.

Analytical Writing is always the first test Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Unscored or Research can appear in any order and there is no fixed time.

Quantitative Reasoning: This part of the test does not cause many difficulties for candidates because it only tests the knowledge of Quantitative Mathematics that has been learned in secondary and high school. Once you have practiced hundreds of questions in GRE preparation, you will know which questions are difficult and which are easy for you. No points are deducted for wrong answers and no answers. Candidates are allowed to move forward and backward in each section, which means they can skip the question and return to it later, or change the test. Change and correct your answers if there is time left in that section of the test.

For you to easily increase your score on the Quantitative section of the GRE test, “GRE Math Review” by CliffsNotes will be an extremely suitable book for you. You will easily become familiar with the language and structure of the exam through exercises with answers and mock tests to help you study Math easier.

Verbal Reasoning: Each subsection of the GRE Verbal will have 20 questions and you will solve them in 30 minutes. Therefore, it can be said that each question will take you about 1.5 minutes to answer. Verbal is considered by the majority of people who have studied for the exam as the difficult part, this part is used to assess your ability to analyze Analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships between sentence elements, and recognize relationships between words and concepts. “ETS Official Guide to the GRE 2nd edition” is considered as GRE’s method of learning new words gradually to get used to the standard format to help support the Verbal section. After learning this method, you will focus on the “Official Guide” to familiarize yourself with the standard question format.

Analytical Writing: For the Analytical Writing test, the length of the essay is not a factor to help you score, because 2 essays are only 30 minutes. You need to allocate a reasonable time to optimize the analysis. To prepare for this section, you should refer some materials may appeared in your GRE test like:“ETS Official Overview of Analytical Writing Section”, “GRE Issue AWA Questions Bank”, “GRE Argument AWA Questions Bank”, these materials will  help you clearly present your ideas and meet the requirements of the GRE with open-mindedness, strong reasoning, diverse languages, …
