How high do you need for SAT score?
The required SAT scores of American universities and colleges may vary, so when you are planning to study a major at a certain university, you need to carefully research the entrance requirements of the previous year’s scores and the predicted score of the following year. Also, pay close attention to whether the certificate required by the school is SAT/ACT or IELTS/TOEFL in the Admission Requirements section of Undergraduate Programs.
In addition to the SAT requirement with an appropriate score, students need to provide additional application components such as GPA scores, recommendation letters, family background, extracurricular activities, or study abroad essays as well so that the entrance committee can consider and approve candidates. In general, if candidates achieve SAT scores of 1,300 or higher, the level of competition compared to other candidates will be higher when applying to universities. With reputable schools, you should have SAT scores above 1,500. Here’s how to distinguish the differences among raw – scale – percentile in SAT you should know.

How is the total SAT score calculated?
The overall SAT score will range from 400 to 1,600 points calculated from the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections. The optional SAT Essay is scored separately. The evidence-Based Reading and Writing section will include the Reading, Writing, and Language Tests.
Math section score will be based on Math Tests including the calculator and non-calculator portions. Scores on Reading, Writing and Language and Math Tests will be individually scored from 10-40 points, then combined into Evidence-Based Reading with a scale of 200-800 (similar to Math section).

The differences among raw – scale – percentile in SAT
- Raw score and scale score: To calculate section scores, you need to calculate the raw score first. The raw score is the number of correct answers for each section. For the SAT, if you get it wrong or do not answer the question, no points will be deducted. Once you get the raw score, you’ll convert the raw score into a scaled score based on a 200 to 800 scale. This conversion process can adjust for differences in difficulty among versions of the tests and still keep some points of consistency.
- Percentile score: In addition to calculating the total score on a scale of 400 to 1,600, you should know how to calculate percentile rank so that you can improve your score in mock tests to reach a percentile rank that the university requires. The percentile score is not the percentage of correct answers. That is, if you get a 75% rank, this does not mean that you have answered 75 questions correctly. The percentage score helps you to see how many candidates have a score equal to or lower than your score so that you can predict your chances of passing in comparison to other candidates. Assuming you are getting a score of 75%, this means you are getting the same or higher score than 75% of the candidates on the same exam.
