Why should we know differences among raw – scale – percentile in ACT?
Similar to SAT, ACT is a standardized test used by US universities to evaluate and select suitable students. A standard ACT test will have 4 compulsory sections (English, Math, Reading, and Science) and an optional section (Writing).
One of the most important things students often care about is ACT score calculation. The way to calculate ACT score easily makes students confuse with the concepts “raw score”, “scale score” and “percentile”. Although ACT allows test-takers to take the test multiple times, not to spend a lot of time and effort, you should fulfill yourself with knowledge for the exam content and information related to the exam for the beginning time.

How to distinguish the differences among raw – scale – percentile in ACT?
- Raw score: The raw score for each ACT section is simply the number of correct answers. For example, you have 40 multiple choice questions in Reading section, the highest raw score will be 40. If you answered 40 questions correctly, your raw score will be 40. In case you answered only 21 out of 40 correctly, your raw score will be 21 points.
- Scaled score: Your total raw score will be converted into a scale score on the 1-36 scale based on the Scale Score Conversion Table. This table will be updated for every ACT test date to ensure each test is standardized and account for differences in content difficulty. Here is the below sample table you can consider:
