Understanding the GRE Score is a somewhat complicated process. Students’ GRE scores are expressed in two forms: Percentile Score and Scale Score. The GRE test is divided into 2 categories: GRE General Test or GRE Subject Test.

  • The General Test (GRE) is a computer-based test administered regularly throughout the year in many regions of the world, focusing on skills that are considered important to students.
  • GRE Subject Test is a test to measure specialized knowledge in 8 specific areas such as Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Cellular, and Molecular biology, emphasizing knowledge and skill level in a particular field.

Both tests are scored on a different GRE scale.

What does your GRE score mean?

Your GRE score has a direct impact on your chances of getting into graduate schools. That influence is determined by two main factors:

  • The first factor: Depends on how the school you want to enter requires GRE scores. Only then can you identify the importance of your GRE score
  • The second factor: Depends on whether your school of interest requires GRE scores or not? This factor will determine how high and low your GRE score will be.

In general, when it comes to understanding what your GRE score means, the first step students need to take is to visualize their surroundings and see how your scores compare to those of other test-takers. To do this, simply look up the current GRE percentages and see where your Subject scores fall. The higher your percentile, the better your GRE score will be for schools to rank.

Once you have a general picture of what your GRE scores mean, it’s time to research the GRE Subject scores for the graduate programs you’re applying to.
